Calcane City - Percy’s Living Unit - Night

Percy sits on the large pillows in his smoking room, the painting of Calcane’s gods hangs above his head and a thin sheet of paper, rolled into a tube and held closed by a green, waxy seal fashioned in the shape of a claw, sits on his lap. He listens to the silence of the living unit, his wife and daughters gone for the evening, attending the day of service event despite his disapproval. He frowns at the thought, but then lets out a long, tired sigh. He can’t win that battle, but he plans to win the war. He grabs his ink pen and breaks the seal, but he doesn’t unfurl the note, not yet. He’s always seen himself as a lucky man, despite his many failed bets. In his mind, he has had more wins than losses and that’s despite the reality of his massive gambling debts. He closes his eyes and says his personal mantra, “I’m a lucky man, born in the right house, to the right parents, to the right class. Not many get that kind of luck out the door. Not many at all. Every loss is an investment into something bigger and better.” He taps his finger against the rolled paper and then unfurls it. The bold heading in black block letters reads “Alice Bright Salary Allocation.” He reads over the contract, but he already knows what it says. He has hunted and captured more than his fair share of young people bound by its words. He shakes his head and tells himself that such a terrible fate won’t befall his daughter. He continues to read the contract with the care he would give any bet. And then he smiles when he comes upon the phrase he had insisted the Luerke add—“this salary can only be terminated upon the payment of 2 and half times the value of said property.” The value is stated as 25,000 credits, a seriously large sum for Calcane, but Percy has seen gamblers with only half his luck score double that in a single night. He signs his name and bargains his daughter’s future. This is his big break, he can feel it—his chance to prove to himself that he can be something better, something greater than a hunter.
